What Is Macular Degeneration?

This is an eye disease that is caused by aging. It can also be caused by a lot of UV light exposure. It causes patients to lose the center part of their vision. Though it can start earlier, it's usually found in people who are older. This disease is caused by the macula of the eye getting worn out. When it first begins, it may cause no noticeable vision changes. However, it gets worse as time goes on. The eye has an area called the retina in the back of the eyes, and the middle section of it is caused the macula. As this tissue starts to get wear to it, vision loss will result.

Symptoms to Watch for

In the beginning, there may be no symptoms that it's started. As it progresses, however, vision changes will begin to be noticed. The central area of the patient's vision will start getting blurry and darker. Patients may see that the colors they're used to have started fading. You might also discover that you have a harder time recognizing faces because they look blurry and dark. In many people with macular degeneration, these symptoms start very slowly and get worse over time. However, it's also possible for the symptoms to start all at once.
