Workplace Eye Wellness from Our Optometrist in Ocala
During Workplace Eye Wellness Month, our Ocala eye doctors would like to remind you about protecting your vision and eye heath at work. It's easy to get caught up in work and forget about potential eye problems, but don't take your vision for granted. Chances are, your workplace is not the ideal place for eye health, and some locations can be downright hazardous when it comes to potential eye injuries.
Long Term Eye Strain Affects Your Eyes and Health
It doesn't take major eye injuries to affect your vision, however. Our eye doctors in Ocala note that the cumulative effect of daily computer eye strain, working in a dry environment or a location full of airborne contaminants, bacteria and/or chemicals, can damage your vision over time. For this reason, the best thing you can do to preserve your eye health for life is to see your optometrist regularly for an annual eye exam and between visits, be sure to properly protect your eyes at work.
How Our Ocala Eye Doctor Helps Preserves Workplace Eye Health and Sharp Vision
Nearly 15% of patients show or report eye problems from job-related computer use, according to the AOA (American Optometric Association). Computer vision problems are increasingly common as jobs go high-tech, so your eye doctor near Ocala has developed options to help you avoid eye fatigue, blurred vision, and other screen-related vision problems. Treatment options include:
Glasses to improve computer vision - Computer vision syndrome symptoms, such as eyestrain, fatigue, blurred vision, dry eyes, and headaches can be prevented with new, more computer-friendly eyeglass lenses, combined with short breaks and refocusing on far-away objects occasionally. The 20-20-20 rule is an easy way to remember. Every 20 minutes look at something 20 feet or further away for 20 seconds. Also, specially designed computer glasses are made to give the most comfortable and clearest vision when working with one, two, or even three computer screens at your workstation. Most modern screens today use LED lighting to improve brightness and energy efficiency, but they also give off a lot more blue light. High energy blue light can cause discomfort, eye strain, and there is some research associating it with eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration. New anti-glare lenses help reduce eye strain and blur from glare, but some also block some of the blue light from these screens to help keep your vision comfortable and your eyes safe and healthy.
Vision therapy exercises - This customized treatment strengthens neurological connections between the brain and eyes. It involves customized eye exercises, which can treat or prevent visual processing problems caused by computer eyestrain.
Eye injury prevention - Our eye doctor near Ocala offers scratch and impact resistant lenses and a selection of sturdy frames. There is no substitute, however, for protective eyewear, such as goggles that meet OSHA standards for industrial workplaces. If you work in construction, for example, we can make safety glasses specified for your industry or position to keep your eyes protected. Depending on your workplace you may be able to have lenses that turn into sunglasses when you go outside and turn clear inside so you don’t have to carry two pairs of glasses with you. Wear them over your eyeglasses or contacts, as necessary, to protect your eyes.
